SEASON ONE

VOLUME TWO: EXPERIMENTATION

JULY 2024 - OCTOBER 2024

EXPERIMENTATION

In this volume, I find myself immersed in a period of bold experimentation—testing new techniques, reimagining my aesthetic, and, at its core, exploring the very essence of my creativity.

I believe that self-exploration is essential for every artist. We should never confine ourselves to rigid boundaries. When we impose limits on ourselves, we also restrict the flow of our creativity. True artistic freedom lies in the willingness to venture beyond what is known and embrace the unknown. My art is an extension of myself and being.

After all, do you truly want to blend in?

Experimentation requires the courage to SHED preconceived notions and start from scratch. It calls for the audacity to explore without fear and reservation.

I pushed myself beyond the confines of comfort, seeking truth through DISCOVERY and EXPERIMENTATION. It was only in this process that I could uncover a deeper sense of IDENTITY—one that is uniquely mine, evolving, and ever-expanding

So, as you read, I invite you to experience the what is becoming KILLAVSN.

Enjoy the read!

Blessings always,

Here we go with yet ANOTHER coincidence! But, let me give you a little back story first. Y’all are going to have to stick around for this one.

‘COMPLEMENTARY’ started out as such a simple concept and later reveals the beauty of unexpected friendships and the story behind it. The UNEXPECTED one’s are normally the greatest of them.

During this timeframe, I was image HUNGRY! I was practically a hungry, hungry hippo for photographs, LOL! I was looking for as many excuses to be able to take photos. To tell a story.

After releasing ‘HOMAGE TO PRIDE,’ I had already told Quinton that I wanted to do a DUO photoshoot with them and their best-friend. It was just a matter of time until we were all able to make this happen.

This was a photoshoot with a couple of firsts! First DUO photoshoot for the both of us and a first photoshoot in general for Tatiana. We were all learning, and I LOVED that! It allowed for so much grace and so much ideas to flow through.

Let me tell you something! While the photographs for this series are absolutely stunning, we were OUTSIDE in Florida… in the month of AUGUST… Now, I’ve lived in Florida on and off for about 6 years, and for those who live here, know exactly what I am trying to say when I mention those words.

In other words, it was SCORCHING HOT. We were all sweating in places we did not want to be sweating in! TMI, Oh well! Thankfully after a couple of hours of being fried by the sun, we were able to get it done.

STORY TIME!!! (And coincidence time!!!)

The name ‘COMPLEMENTARY’ came to me super easily to be honest! I thought about how friendships are normally individuals that COMPLEMENT each other, while also basing it on the fact that they were in a COMPLEMENTARY color scheme. It was a perfect name to describe their friendship. Seems, simple enough, right?

Check this out… I scare myself sometimes, LOL!

So about a month and a half after releasing this series, I had reached out to Tatiana and Quinton as I wanted to get the story behind their friendship and how it came to be. Here it is:

Quinton and Tatiana met about 6 years ago during high school. They were sitting adjacent of each other on the bus, heading back home from school that day. Quinton breaks the ice by COMPLIMENTING Tatiana on her shoes in which they both exchanged smiles and continued their conversations. (COMPLEMENTCOMPLIMENT… are you spotting the coincidence?) Super cute, huh?! But wait, that’s not the end of it.

Quinton mentioned that he found himself giggling as he saw Tatiana laugh with her friends. Her laugh was infectious!

When they got off the bus, they both said their ‘good-byes’ to one another, and coincidentally started walking in the same direction. Turns out they both lived in the same apartment complex. They both eventually made it back to their homes, only to find out that they were NEIGHBORS! It also turns out they were born 16 hours apart and moved to Florida around the same time! Sounds like two soulmates meeting, huh?!

When asked the secret to their friendship, they answered: “COMMUNICATION!” Being in a constant state of openness and transparency… and now, the rest is history!

Hearing this, I couldn’t help to think of how life has a beautiful way of bringing complete strangers together in the most unique ways. Sometimes in ways, we would not expect. Sometimes all it takes is a COMPLIMENT to your… COMPLEMENT

COMPLIMENT: a polite expression of praise or admiration

COMPLEMENT: a thing that completes or brings to perfection

“A great marriage is not when the ‘perfect couple’ comes together. It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.” — Dave Meurer

Anytime I am put in a position to do something new or be placed in a different environment, I welcome the challenge of being OPEN and RECEPTIVE. Not only was this my first time photographing a wedding - this was also the first time I had EVER been to a wedding.

One thing about me, is that I LOVE love. No, but like, literally.

I’m the type of person that loves to see a good ROM-COM, and loves a romantic moment in a TV-show, so this was right up my alley way.

I am always meeting people in the funniest of ways and I love that. It adds to the LORE. I actually met Yoshi first on a night that I decided to go out by myself (something very typical for me.) She was out with her maid of honor at the time. I honestly completely forget what sparked the conversation, but it ended with all of us going TEQUILA SHOT for TEQUILA SHOT. GOLLY!!!!!

The hangover was not cute, but the memory was EVERYTHING. Just three free spirits having a good ol’ time! I remember Yoshi had mentioned that she was going to get married, but I never figured I would be the one to get to capture this momentous occasion.

Fast forward, Yoshi, knowing that I was a student looking to build my portfolio in many different fields, reached out to me hoping that I would be able to photograph her wedding.

Talk about a BLESSING, huh?!

This was by far one of the biggest blessings and honors to not only capture, but witness as a whole.

Without divulging too much detail. Yoshi and Freddy were actually married prior to their wedding. This wedding ceremony had occurred more sporadically than anticipated due to Yoshi’s father being terminal.

What made this ceremony so beautiful was that it was done in honor of Yoshi’s father. This was an opportunity for a father to formally send his daughter off before his time of being called to a higher place. Not only did he get to see/witness this, he OFFICIATED the ceremony.

Do y’all like to cry? Cause I LOVE to cry! There were times where I had to remember that I was there to work and not to be a fountain of tears, LOL!

I had the honor of also capturing the behind the scene moments leading up to the wedding ceremony.

They are not lying when they say that it takes a TRIBE. 10/10 experience!

While sometimes it appears as though my projects are carefully thought out… majority of the times they aren’t. They’re SPORADIC. Quite frankly, that’s what makes the process so fun, because at that moment in time, I am not constrained to any concepts and can really allow my creativity to take over.

I first met LuvZego, or Zego for short, after my first attempt at event photography (see photograph under ‘Michael’). Given the opportunity to photograph other artists at this event, Zego’s natural stage presence coupled with his UNIQUE sound caught my attention.

During this timeframe, I had also proposed the idea of ‘CONTROVERSY’ to Zego, and while he agreed to the concept, time got the best of me and he was not able to participate in the series.

One missed opportunity just means another waiting to happen. It was just a matter of time!

After working on ‘GLASS SKIN’ and getting a glimpse of working with other artists, I knew that I wanted to keep on holding space within my brand to keep doing so. Especially with music artists as music has always held a special place in my heart.

I had reached back out to Zego offering a collaboration and it just so happened that he was looking to get some artist profiles done for his streaming platforms.

While some may not see a big deal out of this, this was just another opportunity for me to continue EXPERIMENTING with different fields of photography while leaving my mark on other artists. I was super excited for this.

This project demanded being precise with the vision of the artist all while incorporating the KILLAVSN aesthetic.

Zego wanted, what we refer to as, a high-contrast, low key lighting scheme. He wanted it to appear very “GRUNGY” which is on brand for his artistry

By choosing this lighting scheme, Zego now presented with much more of an intense and pensive aesthetic. Having dark elements was very important to him.

My favorite part of any photoshoot is being able to speak to and have conversations with my subjects. Whether that be to joke around, or get a glimpse into who they are. We all carry a STORY.

MICHAEL

(LUVZEGO)

Oh Michael! Probably one of the most kindest people I’ve ever met! I had the opportunity to photograph him during a pop-up performance where he takes a unique approach to his music by adding elements of Goth/Emo/Punk Rock/Hip-Hop. You would think after listening to his music, that you would have an idea as to who he is, but I promise you he is quite literally a RAY OF GREAT ENERGY! Super happy to have collaborated with him on this project. Can’t wait to see where life takes him!

Do not love me for my petals. Love me for my ROOTS.
— KILLAVSN

MUSIC INSPIRATION

I’ve always found Sabrina Claudio’s music to be so beautiful. A very ethereal sound that matched the aesthetic and emotion I was attempting to convey with such a vulnerable piece such as ‘ROOTS.’ A soft tone with a DEEP intention. I needed a sound that would relay my own depth. The parts of me I do not share. The hidden. The suppressed. The unknown. That mysterious component I strive to have in my work. Why? Because, that is also me. MYSTERY.

I consider myself to be a walking juxtaposition and it is highlighted very evidently in my art.

I needed the sound attached to this piece to convey an even deeper sense of femininity as I am someone who embraces their feminine attributes/qualities.

I can go on and on as to why this tone is best suited for this piece, but I’ll let the experience speak for itself.

ROOTS’ EXPLAINED

“Do not love me for my petals. Love me for my ROOTS.”

‘ROOTS’ reflects the inherent yearning to be understood, recognizing the profound complexity that resides within each of us. What lies on the surface barely breaks the tip of the iceberg of who we truly are. ‘ROOTS’ speaks to the desire to be known on a deeper, more intimate level, beyond the external facade.

"Do not love me for my petals" is a cry for authenticity. It is a plea for vulnerability, for the courage to connect with what lies beneath.

As seasons shift and petals fall away, only ‘ROOTS’ remain. Yet, to truly witness the beauty of petals, you must first understand the strength and depth of ‘ROOTS.’

Too often, we desire beauty without an understanding of the necessary coexistence of the ugly. TRUE beauty cannot exist without the process that nurtures it.

Just as a flower cannot bloom without its ROOTS, ROOTS themselves cannot be fully appreciated without the eventual display of petals. The two are inseparable; one feeds the other.

A symbiotic relationship one may say.

Our ROOTS are the essence of beauty, regardless of the difficult and often painful journey they endure to ‘SPROUT’ (foreshadowing?). COMPOSED of experiences, struggles… MY very life—the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The blood in the second image represents these ROOTS—the lifeblood of my being, the real me. It flows through me, through all of us, and it is what makes us all the more beautiful.

When the petals have faded, when the external beauty has withered, what remains?

BEAUTIFUL ROOTS.

This art piece consists of two images: the first is titled "Do Not Love Me for My Petals" and the second, "Love Me for My Roots."

This stems from my own experiences of feeling misunderstood, of being seen for what is on the surface rather than what lies beneath.

On one level, yes, this piece addresses themes of physical beauty and society’s superficial expectations. But on a deeper, more PERSONAL level, I wanted to explore the idea that we are all far more complex than what we present. Our stories, our experiences—they shape us in ways that cannot be understood by simply looking at the surface.

This is not necessarily about wearing masks, though it can be, but rather how the layers of our pasts continually display who we are and how we navigate the world.

We, as individuals, move through seasons of life. Some are beautiful, some are painful, ordinary, and others are downright UGLY. But what remains consistent, is that after each season, our petals do not always bloom the same way emphasizing our innate way of changing and growing.

It’s the roots that stay constant, adapting and evolving with time. To me, that is a reflection of the true beauty we often overlook—the beauty that lies in the foundation of who we are, ever-changing yet rooted.

Beautiful, huh?!

I choose not to show my face, which aligns with my self-portrait aesthetic of mystery, ironically because, by leaving my face hidden, I believe I make the piece more relatable and universal. It allows the work to transcend to others who may also share similar emotions and experiences. The absence of a face allows the piece to speak directly to anyone who has ever felt misunderstood or unseen.

One element that remains transparent in my self-portrait series is the recurring imagery of me being topless, often with my back turned to the viewer.

You might wonder, “Why?”

The answer is simple: When we are naked and our backs are turned to someone, we are at our most vulnerable. This vulnerability speaks not only to the physical exposure but to the emotional openness I am offering through my work.

By sharing intimate insights into my mind and experiences, I invite the viewer to witness my rawness, my uncertainties, and parts of me that are unveiled and unguarded.

The beautiful aspect I view in this specific project are the different meanings and interpretations one may draw. If you flip the image upside down, you would then be able to create a whole new narrative; PERSPECTIVE.

The creation of this piece was not from meticulous planning; rather, it emerged spontaneously as a raw reflection of my emotions at the time.

To continue to hold space for RAW dialogue, I believe it’s essential that I, as the artist, be the first to plant the SEEDS of trust by openly sharing the story behind my work. Only then can I invite others to connect with the piece on a deeper level.

This artwork, in particular, reflects the heartbreak I experienced following the end of a relationship in March 2024. Interestingly, it wasn’t typical sorrow one might feel after an overdue separation. The true heartbreak stemmed from once again finding myself in a space where I felt misunderstood and unseen. It was as though the connection had been reduced to something shallow, something superficial.

This piece became a mirror, forcing me to stop seeking external validation. Instead, it revealed that the validation I was searching for had always resided within me. It was in that realization that I was able to hone in on the core message I wanted to convey—one of SELF-EMPOWERMENT and inner TRUTH, of finding STRENGTH in my own narrative.

Because I too am a VISION. In fact, I am…

ARTWORK SPOTLIGHT:

SPROUT

SELF-PORTRait series

“If you truly think that you’re ready for something, don’t you think you would already have it?”

As I transform out of the past, I must plant a new seed.

With that seed, I go into a state of silence. I enter my chrysalis and begin my journey of growth. I learn and dig deep into discovery so I may prepare for what will SPROUT.

I must analyze, reflect, and destroy the parts that don’t work so that when I SPROUT, I may be different from the last seed.

“The desire to SPROUT can never rush the graceful process it takes to transform”

Now that the light has graced me, I can now unveil myself.

It is now time to reveal the colors of transformation

But what if the colors aren’t to my liking?

“The desire to SPROUT can never rush the graceful process it takes to transform”

Now that I am getting stronger, I can start to see.

The transformation has not been easy. I constantly crave the state of silence. To be back in my chrysalis.

My new colors are coming in. Out with the old and in with the new

I think I can do this.

“The desire to SPROUT can never rush the graceful process it takes to transform”

SPROUT. SPROUT. SPROUT.

FINALLY SATURATED. FINALLY NOURISHED. FINALLY DEEPLY ROOTED. FINALLY FREE.

I am grateful for the graceful process it has taken to SPROUT.

“The desire to transform can never rush the graceful process it takes to SPROUT”

‘SPROUT’ EXPLAINED

The spoken word that accompanies ‘SPROUT’ is designed to evoke the imagery of an intimate, internal dialogue. This conversation touches on themes of patience, metamorphosis, doubt, and shifting perspectives.

The opening exchange focuses on the necessity of change, highlighting the truth that evolution—rebirth—requires transformation, or rather, GROWTH. The phrase “I must… destroy the parts that don’t work” speaks to this process of letting go.

When we evolve, we SHED what no longer serves us. If we hold onto those outdated aspects, would we truly be growing?

The line “The desire to SPROUT can never rush the graceful process it takes to TRANSFORM offers reassurance in the face of impatience, personally what I consider to be one of the defining struggles of personal growth.

This is a reminder that growth, while often slow and unseen, must follow its natural course. Growth cannot be hurried, nor can it be forced.

This piece, in its entirety, represents a dialogue between my present self and a future, more evolved version of myself—one that offers quiet reassurances in moments of uncertainty.

As the conversation unfolds, the imagery evolves as well, transitioning from the need for change to the metaphor of sprouting—emerging from the cocoon, breaking free of the seed.

The piece emphasizes the in-between stages of transformation, the moments of waiting, the periods where growth is invisible but no less essential. In these spaces, doubt still lingers, and reassurance is STILL required.

The pivotal shift occurs in the final conversation and visual—the moment of SPROUTING. This is when we finally witness the fruits of our GROWTH, the change is palpable and visible. It's the moment where we can finally see the culmination of our efforts.

Notice that the perspective has shifted. Where once we were confined to a limited view of growth, we now see it through a broader lens. The final lesson becomes clear: “The desire to TRANSFORM can never rush the graceful process it takes to SPROUT.”

In the end, we realize that we were never merely transforming—we were sprouting. SPROUTING was never an abrupt shift, but rather, a quiet, organic process, unfolding slowly, beautifully, and in its own time.

Musical Inspiration

During this period of time, I found myself growing. I found myself releasing old habits and adopting new habits. Releasing the things in life I feel was no longer serving me. I give the example of when you release an old habit, you are essentially killing a part of yourself, metaphorically speaking. And when something dies, normally what comes after is grief. Grieving an outdated version of ourselves is very important in growth.

For me, this meant releasing FEAR—or more accurately, releasing my need to CONTROL every situation. While fear is crucial for survival, I realized I had been holding onto a fear of the unknown, a fear that burdens many of us. Letting go of this fear required a shift in perspective—a conscious decision to embrace change and self-realization. It was about understanding that growth demands an internal shift, a transformation in how we see ourselves and the world around us.

This is why I chose the two versions of the same song, Guidance by Jhené Aiko, to accompany this reflection/art-piece. Though the lyrics are identical, the melodies differ, offering two different perspectives through which to experience the same message. The change in melody reflects the shift in perspective I’m speaking about—the transition from one mental state to another. I wanted the music to mirror the growth I’ve experienced, inviting you to hear not just the words, but the evolution in tone, intent and delivery..

It is all INTENTIONAL.
